This 6x8.5" artwork is a photo of a water tower taken near the Tonto National Monument in Arizona. A print of the photo was transferred onto a wood board, then coated with two layers of encaustic medium, which is a mixture of beeswax and damar resin (a natural tree sap that acts as a hardening agent). The medium is impervious to moisture and will not yellow or darken, so it does not have to be varnished or protected by glass.
Hang and store at normal room temperatures, away from direct sunlight or a heat source.
As the wax cures over the first 6-12 months, a naturally occurring haze may develop (it may also occur if it is exposed to cold). The haze can be easily removed by buffing the surface to a high gloss using a soft, lint-free cloth, pantyhose, or the palm of your hand. The original sheen can be brought back by repeating the buffing process. Once an encaustic painting has fully cured and hardened, it will easily shed dust.
